Bed bugs are small, fast, and easy to miss until the bites start. Here is exactly what to look for on your mattress and skin, where to check, and how they get into Dubai apartments in the first place.
Send us a photo of the spotting or the bug on WhatsApp. We'll confirm whether it's bed bugs and quote the right treatment straight away.
An adult bed bug is about 4 to 5mm long, flat, oval, and reddish-brown, roughly the size and colour of an apple seed. After feeding it looks rounder and darker. They are visible to the naked eye, so you do not need a magnifier to confirm one, though a torch helps because they hide in dark seams and joints.
Younger bed bugs, called nymphs, are smaller and paler, closer to translucent when they have not fed, which makes them much harder to spot against light-coloured bedding. The eggs are tiny, around 1mm, pale and slightly sticky, and are laid in cracks and along fabric seams in small clusters. Because the eggs and nymphs are so easy to overlook, people often assume the problem is smaller than it is.
Bed bugs leave a very consistent trail. If you know what to look for, the evidence is usually clearer than the bugs themselves. Check for these:
Finding faecal spotting and shed skins together is a stronger confirmation than a handful of bites. Bites tell you something is feeding on you. The spotting tells you what.
Bed bug bites usually show up as itchy red welts on the skin left exposed while you sleep, most often the arms, shoulders, neck, and back. They frequently appear in a line or a small cluster rather than scattered at random, and you tend to notice them in the morning because the bugs feed while you are still.
The important caveat: reactions vary enormously. Some people develop obvious welts within hours, others react a day or two later, and a fair number show no marks at all despite an active infestation. That is why you cannot diagnose bed bugs from the bite alone. Mosquito bites, flea bites, heat rash, and allergic reactions can all look similar. Always confirm by finding the physical evidence described above before you assume the worst, and equally before you rule it out.
WhatsApp us a photo of your mattress seams and any bites. We'll tell you honestly whether it needs treatment.
Bed bugs stay close to their food source, so almost everything worth checking sits within about 2 metres of the bed. Work through these in order, with a torch:
If you find nothing near the bed but are still being bitten, check the sofa and any chair you regularly fall asleep in, because bed bugs will colonise upholstered furniture too.
Bed bugs do not fly or jump. They spread by hitching a ride. In Dubai the three common routes are luggage and travel, which is the biggest single factor given how much people fly in and out; second-hand furniture, where an infested mattress or sofa carries a live population straight into your home; and movement through wall and floor voids between apartments, so a neighbour's infestation can become yours through shared building structure.
Because they multiply quickly, a few bugs brought home in a suitcase can become an established problem within a month or two. They are not known to carry disease, but they spread easily inside a building, which is why a confirmed case is worth dealing with promptly rather than waiting to see if it clears. Whether you are in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE, the pattern is the same.
Shop-bought sprays deal with the bugs you can see and reach, but they rarely solve the infestation. The eggs are the problem. They are coated in a shell that resists most contact sprays, so even a thorough spray leaves a hidden batch of eggs that hatch days later and rebuild the population. On top of that, the bugs shelter deep inside frame joints, skirting, and wall voids where household sprays never reach, and disturbing them with the wrong product can push them into new rooms and make things worse.
An effective treatment follows a proper protocol, typically two visits spaced to break the egg cycle.
