If a single gecko is trapped in a room and you just want it gone, work with its instincts rather than against them. Geckos move towards light and towards insects. Turn off the lights in the room, open one window or door to the outside, and switch on a light just outside that opening, such as a balcony or corridor light. Most geckos will head for the lit gap within a few minutes.

If it will not move, herd it gently with a soft broom towards the open door, or trap it under an upturned plastic container and slide a piece of card underneath to carry it outside. Never chase or grab it: a stressed gecko drops its tail and bolts into the nearest crack, and now you have a tail-less lizard hiding behind your wardrobe. House gecko or house lizard? The same animal, different names

People in the UAE call this animal a house lizard, a house gecko, or a room lizard depending on where they grew up, and all three names describe exactly the same thing: the common Hemidactylus geckos that live in and around buildings across the Gulf. There is no separate "room lizard" species and no meaningful difference between a house lizard and a house gecko. If you searched for one and found the other, you are in the right place.

Knowing that matters for one practical reason. Advice written about "lizards" in general, including garden lizards and monitor lizards, does not apply to the animal on your bedroom ceiling. Everything on this page is about the house gecko specifically.

How to tell a gecko from the other lizards you see outdoors

• Skin. Geckos are soft-skinned and slightly translucent, pale cream to grey. Outdoor agamas and skinks are firm-scaled, often shiny or patterned, and look noticeably tougher.
• Time of day. Geckos are nocturnal and you will see them after dark near lights. Agamas and skinks are day-active and disappear at night, which is the quickest tell of all.
• Climbing. Geckos have adhesive toe pads and walk straight up painted walls, tiles, glass and across ceilings. Skinks and agamas cannot grip smooth vertical surfaces, so a lizard on your wall is a gecko.
• Sound. House geckos vocalise, a short clicking or chirping "chak-chak" call, usually at night. Other UAE lizards are silent.
• Where you find it. Geckos come indoors. Agamas, skinks and dhubs stay outside on walls, sand and rocks, and only end up in a building by accident.

Which lizards you're dealing with

Almost all house lizards in Dubai apartments are common house geckos — specifically Hemidactylus flaviviridis (the yellow-bellied house gecko) or Hemidactylus frenatus (the common tropical house gecko). They're 7–15cm long, pale cream to grey, and fully nocturnal. You'll see them on walls near light sources at night, hunting flying insects.

They're not venomous, don't bite unless cornered, and pose no direct health risk. The hygiene concern is their droppings — elongated black pellets with a white uric acid tip — which accumulate on walls, shelves, and any surface they regularly patrol.

Dubai also has outdoor monitor lizards (dhubs) and desert geckos, but these very rarely enter buildings and are a completely different issue.

Why your lizard population increases

Geckos are predators and their density in your apartment directly reflects the insect population available to them. The most common triggers for a sudden increase:

• New insect problem in the building — a nearby apartment with cockroaches, or a fruit fly outbreak in the waste room, creates an insect surplus the geckos exploit
• External lights near windows — balcony lights and outdoor corridor lights attract flying insects at night; geckos follow and find entry gaps near the window frames
• Warm months (April–October) — insect activity peaks in Dubai's summer, so lizard activity peaks alongside it
• New building or renovation nearby — construction disturbs ground-level populations and pushes them into adjacent buildings

How geckos enter apartments

House geckos can pass through gaps as small as 5mm. In Dubai apartments, the main entry points are:

• Gaps around AC pipe penetrations through exterior walls (these are rarely fully sealed)
• Window frame edge gaps — especially sliding windows where the rubber seal has degraded
• Under and around front doors if the door seal strip is missing or compressed
• Service ducts and electrical conduit entry points into the apartment
• Gaps around kitchen and bathroom pipes where they pass through walls

Geckos don't chew through materials — they only use existing gaps. This means exclusion is theoretically possible but requires systematic inspection of every penetration point.

What you can do yourself

1. Remove the food supply

This is the highest-leverage step. If you treat for flying insects and cockroaches effectively, gecko populations will decline on their own within 4–8 weeks because their food source disappears. Ensure bins are covered, food is stored in sealed containers, and kitchen cleaning is thorough.

2. Reduce outdoor lighting

If you have control over balcony or window-adjacent lighting, switch to yellow-spectrum LED bulbs — they attract significantly fewer flying insects than white or blue-spectrum light. This reduces the nightly insect supply near your entry points.

3. Seal key entry points

AC pipe penetrations are the most cost-effective sealing priority — buy expanding foam filler from ACE Hardware or a local hardware shop and fill the gaps around AC pipes on the external wall. Apply silicone sealant around window frame edges where gaps are visible. Add door seal strips to exterior doors.

4. Repellent options

Naphthalene balls placed near known entry points and in cupboards where lizards are active have a mild deterrent effect. Commercially available lizard repellent sprays (pepper-extract based) can be applied around entry points and window frames. These are short-term measures — they need reapplication every few weeks and work best combined with exclusion.

Geckos are vertebrates, not insects, and no insecticide is approved or intended to be used against them in a home. Any company promising a spray that wipes out lizards is either describing a repellent, or using a product outside its approved purpose in your kitchen. So a genuine lizard service is not one treatment, it is three things done properly.

1. An insect treatment to remove the food supply. This is the part that produces the lasting result. Gecko numbers track the insects available to them, so treating the flying and crawling insects in and around the flat starves the population down over the following 4 to 8 weeks.
2. Physical exclusion of entry points. Sealing AC pipe penetrations, degraded window seals, door gaps and conduit entries. Geckos do not chew their way in, they only use gaps that already exist, so every one you close is permanent progress.
3. Repellent and trapping at patrol routes. Residual repellent gel at entry points and along wall-ceiling junctions near lights, plus sticky boards for the individuals already inside.

• Check window seals annually — rubber compression seals degrade in Dubai's UV and heat; replace them when you see gaps
• Don't leave balcony doors open at night near lights — this is the single highest-risk behaviour for gecko entry
• Report insect problems in communal areas — rubbish rooms, car parks, and stairwells with high insect activity feed the whole building's lizard population
