Most pest control products sold in UAE supermarkets work for specific situations — and fail completely for others. This guide covers which DIY approaches are worth trying for Dubai's most common household pests, and the clear signs that a problem has crossed the line where professional treatment is the cheaper long-term option.

Everything a Dubai household needs for DIY pest control is on the shelf at Carrefour, Union Coop or Ace Hardware. The problem is that the shelf gives you no guidance, and the products that look most impressive (the big aerosol cans, the foggers) are the ones that do the least for an actual infestation. Here is what each category genuinely does.
The single most useful DIY purchase, roughly AED 25 to 60 for a syringe. Gel bait works on cockroaches and ants that never touch the bait themselves, because the ones that feed carry the active ingredient back into the colony and pass it on through droppings and grooming. That is the only DIY mechanism that reaches the population you cannot see.
Placement is what separates a gel that works from one that does nothing. Put down many small pin-head dots in harbourage, not a few large blobs in the open. Twenty to thirty dots in a small kitchen is normal. Target the inside of cabinet hinges, the underside of shelves, the gap behind and under the fridge, the motor compartment area, around pipe entries under the sink, and the back edges of drawers. Cockroaches feed where they shelter, and they will not cross an open floor to reach a blob in the middle of a tile.
Honest limits: gel is excellent for light to moderate cockroach and ant problems. It will not clear a heavy German cockroach infestation on its own, and it does nothing at all for bed bugs, rodents or termites.
Cheap, unglamorous, and the most underused product in the shop. A monitor trap does not control anything: it tells you where the problem is, which is the information most people are missing before they start treating. Place several flat against wall-floor junctions under the sink, behind the fridge, beside the bin, in the bathroom and near any pipe penetration, then read them after three nights. The trap with the most catches marks your treatment zone. Monitors also tell you whether a treatment is working, since catch numbers should fall week on week. In a bed bug case they confirm whether you actually have bed bugs before you spend money on the wrong thing.
Baygon, Raid and similar cans give fast knockdown of what you can see, and that is essentially the whole of their value. They are repellent, which is the critical detail: cockroaches actively avoid treated surfaces. Spraying near a gel bait placement drives cockroaches away from the bait and destroys the one mechanism that was going to reach the colony. Never use both in the same area. Use aerosol for a single visible cockroach or a wasp, and nothing more ambitious than that.
These leave an insecticidal film that stays active on a surface for weeks, and they sit between aerosols and professional treatment. They are useful along skirting boards, thresholds, balcony door tracks and the perimeter of a villa garden where you want a barrier against ants and crawling insects coming in from outside. Two honest limits: they only work where you apply them, so they miss everything living in wall voids and appliance motors, and consumer concentrations in the UAE are low enough that pyrethroid-resistant German cockroaches, which are widespread in Dubai, often shrug them off. Treat them as a perimeter tool, not a solution.
Ultrasonic plug-in repellers have no reliable evidence behind them for any of the pests found in Dubai homes. Bug bombs and total-release foggers cause more problems than they solve in an apartment (see below). Agricultural-grade concentrates sold outside licensed channels are unsafe to apply without professional equipment and are not legal for residential use.
For German cockroaches (the small, fast species living in Dubai apartment kitchens), gel bait consistently outperforms aerosol spray for DIY use.
Products: Raid Max Gel, Combat Gel, Maxforce (if available). Apply small dots (pea-sized) inside cabinet hinges, under the sink, behind the refrigerator, and around pipe entry points. Do not clean these areas for 2 weeks — the bait transfers through the colony via feeding and fecal contact. Reapply if the bait dries out (check every 5–7 days).
Gel bait works on cockroaches that never directly contact the bait, making it far more effective for colony elimination than spray.
Consumer sprays (Baygon, Raid) kill on contact but provide limited residual effect and don't reach cockroaches in harbourage areas. Useful for immediate knockdown of visible cockroaches — not effective for eliminating a colony. The risk of overuse: cockroach populations in Dubai are increasingly resistant to pyrethroid-based sprays, which are the active ingredient in most consumer products.
Ant spray kills foragers (the ants you see) but does nothing to the colony — which can be thousands of individuals including multiple queens, living in the wall or outside the building. Kill the foragers and the colony sends more.
The effective DIY approach for ants is the same as cockroaches: ant gel bait. Ants carry gel bait back to the colony and feed it to the queen. Colony elimination takes 5–14 days. Available options in UAE supermarkets: Raid Ant Gel, Combat Ant Bait. Apply along ant trails, not in random spots.
For outdoor ant trails in villa gardens entering through the perimeter, granular bait (Maxforce Granular — sold in some garden centers) is more effective than gel as it's rain-resistant and accessible to ground-foraging species.
Drain flies breed in the organic biofilm inside drain pipes — not on surfaces you can spray. Consumer aerosol spray kills adults on contact but leaves the larval population in the drain completely untouched. The population rebuilds within days.
The effective DIY fix: enzyme-based drain cleaner (BioKleen or similar, available at Carrefour). Enzyme cleaners break down the biofilm that drain fly larvae live in. Apply per the instructions and follow with boiling water after 20 minutes. Repeat every 2–3 days for 2 weeks.
Also treat your AC condensate drain line — a thin plastic tube exiting near your AC unit. This is the most commonly overlooked drain fly breeding source in Dubai apartments. Flush monthly with diluted bleach (1 part bleach, 10 parts water).

Bed bug DIY treatment has a low success rate for one reason: egg survival. Consumer spray products can't penetrate the waxy egg casing, and most consumer aerosols have weak residual activity. You'll kill visible adults and nymphs, but hatching eggs will produce a new population in 2–3 weeks.
DIY has a chance only in the very earliest stage — a single bug or two found before an established colony forms. At this stage: wash all bedding at 60°C, dry on high heat for 30 minutes, and encase the mattress immediately. If you see more than 3–4 bugs, evidence of bites over multiple nights, or black spotting (fecal staining) on mattress seams, call a professional.
Bed bug infestations in Dubai are more common than most people realise, particularly in areas with high tenant turnover (International City, Discovery Gardens, shared accommodation buildings). Second-hand furniture is the primary acquisition route.
For a single mouse: snap traps (Victor or similar, available at hardware stores) baited with peanut butter are the most effective and fastest option. Place along wall edges — mice move along walls, not across open floors. Check daily and reset.
For rats or confirmed rodent entry: DIY is typically insufficient for two reasons. First, rats are significantly more cautious about new objects (bait shyness) and often avoid traps for several days. Second, the entry point needs to be identified and sealed — without that step, new rodents replace trapped ones within days.
Rodenticide bait stations (sold in UAE hardware stores) work but require careful placement away from children and pets, and carcass management — a rat consuming rodenticide may die in a wall cavity. For apartments, professional treatment with bait stations placed in tamper-resistant housing is both more effective and safer.
Some DIY attempts simply fail. These five actively make the situation harder and more expensive to fix, and they account for a large share of the jobs we get called to.
Pharaoh ants and ghost ants, both common in Dubai apartments, respond to chemical stress by budding. Workers evacuate the stressed nest carrying queens and brood with them, and establish several new nests elsewhere in the wall void. You spray one trail and end up with four trails from four separate nests, sometimes in rooms that had no ants at all before. This is the most reliably self-defeating thing you can do in DIY pest control. Tiny ants in an apartment get baited, never sprayed.
Aerosol and residual sprays are repellent. Apply one anywhere near your gel dots and cockroaches will avoid the treated zone entirely, including the bait you paid for. The bait dries out untouched, you conclude that gel does not work, and the colony carries on. Pick one method per area and commit to it. If you have already sprayed, wipe the surface down and wait a few days before placing bait there.
Total-release foggers are the worst option for an apartment cockroach problem. The fog settles on open surfaces and does not penetrate the wall voids, cabinet carcasses and appliance motors where cockroaches actually live, so the colony survives. What it does achieve is dispersal: the survivors scatter deeper into the structure and along shared service risers into neighbouring flats, turning your problem into the building's problem and guaranteeing reinfestation. They also leave an oily residue over every kitchen surface and carry a real fire risk near pilot lights.
Gel bait needs to sit undisturbed for at least two weeks while the colony feeds on it and passes the active ingredient around. Wiping out the cabinets two days after placement, which people do because they associate cockroaches with a cleaning failure, removes the treatment before it has done anything. Clean the rest of the kitchen thoroughly, and leave the dots alone. Check them every five to seven days and refresh any that have dried or been eaten down.
Consumer sprays cannot penetrate the waxy casing of a bed bug egg, so even a treatment that kills every adult and nymph leaves the next generation intact to hatch in six to ten days. Worse, the spray is repellent, so bugs disperse away from the treated bed into the skirting boards, the sofa, the wardrobe and the next bedroom. A problem that was confined to one mattress becomes a whole-flat job, which costs several times more to resolve. For bed bugs, DIY spraying is not a slow route to the same outcome, it is a route to a worse one.
