WhatsApp now Where they turn up in UAE homes
Scorpions and larger spiders are ground-level pests, so apartments above the second floor almost never see them. The properties that do are villas, townhouses and ground-floor units, particularly those backing onto open desert, sabkha, undeveloped plots or active construction land.
The usual finds are in the same handful of places: the garage floor, under plant pots and paving slabs, along the base of garden walls, inside stored boxes, in irrigation boxes and pump housings, and in shoes or laundry left outside overnight. Landscaped gardens with mulch, dense ground cover and drip irrigation hold moisture and insects, which is what both groups are looking for.
One local pattern is worth knowing. New communities built on freshly cleared desert land see the most activity in their first few years, because the clearing displaces whatever was living there and those animals move into the nearest shelter, which is your garden wall and garage. It usually settles as the surrounding land is built out.
Scorpions: the honest risk picture
The UAE has a number of scorpion species and they are not equally significant. For a healthy adult, the great majority of stings produce intense local pain, burning, redness and swelling that fades over hours. It is genuinely unpleasant and it is not usually life threatening.
That said, species of medical significance are recorded in the region, including the Arabian fat-tailed scorpion and the deathstalker, and individual reactions vary widely. The same species can give one adult a bad few hours and put a small child in hospital. Body weight matters, existing heart and breathing conditions matter, and allergy matters.
So we give the same advice every time rather than trying to rank species by danger at the kerbside: any sting in a child, any sting where symptoms spread beyond the sting site, and any sting followed by breathing difficulty, vomiting, sweating, muscle twitching or a racing heart needs prompt medical attention. UAE hospitals are well equipped to manage scorpion envenomation, and going in early is far better than waiting to see how it develops.
We are pest control technicians, not doctors. Our job is to reduce the chance of a sting happening. If one happens, the hospital decides what treatment is needed.
If someone is stung
Standard first aid, then a decision about medical care.
- Move away from the spot so nobody is stung again, and keep the person calm and still.
- Wash the site with soap and water and apply a cool compress for the pain. Keep the limb at roughly heart level.
- Do not cut the wound, apply a tourniquet, attempt to suck out venom or pack it in ice. None of these help and some cause harm.
- Photograph the scorpion from a safe distance if you can. Identification helps the treating doctor.
- Seek medical attention for any child, any pregnant woman, anyone with a heart or breathing condition, and anyone whose symptoms go beyond local pain and swelling.
The camel spider myth, dismantled
Camel spiders generate more panic in the UAE than anything else in this article, and nearly all of it comes from viral photographs and forwarded messages rather than biology. They are solifugids, an order of arachnids separate from both true spiders and scorpions, also called sun spiders or wind scorpions.
- They are not venomous. They have no venom glands and no fangs for injecting venom. They kill prey with large chewing jaws instead. A bite from a large one would hurt and could break the skin, and it should be cleaned like any other wound, but there is no venom involved.
- They do not chase people. They run toward shade, and the largest patch of shade in an open desert is the one you are casting. Step aside and the animal follows the shadow, which looks exactly like pursuit and is not.
- They are not the size of the photos. The infamous mid-2000s images were shot with the animal held near the lens, which made it look several times its true size. Real ones are measured in centimetres.
- They do not kill camels or eat people in their sleep. They eat insects, other arthropods and occasionally very small lizards.
They are fast, they look alarming and they will run into a lit garage. Sweep one into a bucket and release it away from the house, or call us if you would rather not handle it. It is not the emergency the internet has made it.

Get a quote The spiders actually in your villa
The spiders our technicians find in UAE homes are overwhelmingly harmless. Long-legged cellar spiders in ceiling corners, jumping spiders on window frames, garden orb weavers between a wall and a shrub, and wolf spiders hunting on the ground outside. Their venom is built for insects and does not do meaningful damage to people. The real complaint is cosmetic: webbing across the villa entrance, dusty tangles in the garage roof, egg sacs on light fittings and outdoor furniture.
Worth being clear about bites. Most skin lesions people report as spider bites are something else, another insect bite, an infected hair follicle, an abscess or a reaction to a plant or chemical. Spiders are not aggressive and generally bite only when pressed against skin. If you have a spreading, painful, ulcerating or feverish lesion, get it looked at by a doctor rather than treating it at home as a spider bite.
Why you have them: they follow the food
This is the part most homeowners miss. Scorpions and spiders are predators, so their numbers track the population of insects around your property. A villa with crickets under the exterior lights, cockroaches in the garden drains and moths at the porch is offering a food supply, and that is the reason predators are present.
So the effective plan reduces the food supply and the shelter, then closes the gaps:
- Cut the insect population. A general exterior insect treatment does more for scorpion numbers than spraying for scorpions. Our UAE pest season calendar shows when the insect load peaks.
- Fix the lighting. Bright white lights next to doors pull in flying insects all night. Move them away from entrances or switch to yellow-spectrum bulbs, which attract far fewer.
- Remove harbourage. Stacked pots, timber piles, building rubble, bagged garden waste, loose paving and boxes on the garage floor are all daytime shelter. Get them off the ground and away from the walls.
- Exclude. Brush door sweeps on every external door including the garage, screens on weep holes, sealant around pipe and cable penetrations, intact insect screens, and repaired gaps under gate thresholds.
- Manage the irrigation. Overwatered beds against the wall base hold moisture and insects. Water less often and more deeply, and keep dense planting off the wall.
Safety habits worth adopting
If scorpions have been seen on your street, these habits cost nothing and remove most of the realistic risk.
- Shake out shoes, gardening gloves and any clothing left in the garage or on a line outside before putting them on.
- Never put a bare hand into a stored box, under a pot, into a wall cavity or under loose paving. Use a tool, or wear thick gloves.
- Carry a torch outdoors at night and use it on paths, steps and the pool surround. Many species are active after dark.
- If scorpions have been found indoors, move beds away from walls, keep bedding off the floor and check under cots.
- Keep the garage door closed at night, since it is the single most common entry point in UAE villas.
What professional treatment does
A scorpion and spider job is a perimeter job. We apply a residual barrier treatment to the base of the exterior walls, garden walls, gate posts, door and window frames, weep holes, utility penetrations and irrigation boxes, and we treat harbourage points around the plot. Web removal and treatment of eaves, porch ceilings and the garage handles the spider side. Where there is a heavy insect load, a general insect treatment goes in at the same time to cut the food supply.
We will also be straight about the limits. Scorpions are relatively tolerant of insecticide compared with the insects they eat, thanks to a waxy cuticle and a low metabolic rate, and one may cross a treated surface without dropping on the spot. That is why this has to be an integrated job. Exclusion and habitat reduction carry as much weight as the spray. Properties on the desert edge usually do best on a scheduled programme, because the pressure from outside never stops. For pricing, see our Dubai pest control cost guide.

WhatsApp now FAQ
Are scorpions in the UAE dangerous?
The UAE has a number of scorpion species and they are not equally significant. For a healthy adult, most stings cause intense local pain, swelling and burning that settles over hours rather than anything worse. Species of medical significance are recorded in the region, including the Arabian fat-tailed scorpion and the deathstalker, and reactions vary a great deal between individuals. Children, elderly people, anyone with a heart or breathing condition, and anyone whose symptoms spread beyond the sting site should be seen by a doctor promptly. Treat every sting in a child as a reason to go to hospital rather than wait and watch.
What should I do if I am stung by a scorpion?
Move away from where it happened so you are not stung again, keep the person calm and still, and wash the site with soap and water. A cool compress helps with pain. Keep the limb at roughly heart level and do not cut the wound, apply a tourniquet, suck out venom or ice it hard, because none of that helps. Seek medical attention if the person is a child, if there is any spread of symptoms beyond the sting site, or if there is difficulty breathing, sweating, vomiting, muscle twitching, drooling or a racing heart. If you can safely photograph the scorpion from a distance, do it, because identification helps the treating doctor.
Are camel spiders dangerous?
No, and almost everything circulating about them online is wrong. Camel spiders are solifugids, a separate group of arachnids that are neither true spiders nor scorpions. They have no venom glands and no venom-injecting fangs. They are fast and they have large jaws, so a bite from a big one would hurt and could break skin, but they are not venomous and they do not kill camels, livestock or people. They do not chase you either. They run toward the shade your body casts, which reads as pursuit when it is just an animal trying to get out of the sun. The famous photographs that made them notorious were taken at an angle that exaggerated their size.
Why do I have scorpions in my villa?
Almost always because of food and shelter close to the building. Scorpions follow their prey, so a villa with crickets, cockroaches and other insects around the exterior lighting and landscaping has a reason for scorpions to be there. Add harbourage such as stacked pots, log piles, rubble, loose paving, block walls and stored boxes in the garage, and you have somewhere for them to sit out the day. Villas backing onto desert, open plots or active construction see more, and new communities built on cleared desert land often see the most in their first few years while the displaced population settles.
How do I keep scorpions out of the house?
Exclusion first. Fit brush door sweeps to every external door including the garage, screen weep holes in block or brick walls, seal gaps around pipe and cable entries, and repair torn insect screens. Then remove harbourage within a few metres of the walls: stacked pots, timber, rubble, bagged garden waste and unused building materials. Cut back dense ground planting touching the wall base. Finally, reduce the insects that attract them by moving bright exterior lights away from doors or switching to yellow-spectrum bulbs, which pull in far fewer flying insects.
Are the spiders in Dubai homes venomous?
Nearly all spiders have venom, but that is not the same as being dangerous to people. The spiders our technicians find in UAE homes are mostly harmless web builders, cellar spiders, jumping spiders and garden orb weavers, whose venom works on insects and not on us. The practical problem they cause is webbing, dust and the odd fright, not injury. Worth knowing too: most reported spider bites turn out to be something else, such as another insect bite, a skin infection or an allergic reaction. If you have a spreading, painful or ulcerating skin lesion, see a doctor rather than self-diagnosing it as a spider bite.
