Silverfish Control in Dubai: How to Get Rid of Silverfish

Silverfish are harmless to people and quietly expensive to paper, books and stored clothing. They are also the clearest humidity indicator in a Dubai home. Treat the damp and the insects go; treat only the insects and they are back within months.

How to identify a silverfish

Adults are 10 to 12mm long, teardrop or carrot shaped, tapering from a broad head end to a narrow tail. The body is covered in silvery grey metallic scales that rub off easily, which is why one caught under a glass often looks duller than it did on the floor.

The identifying features are at the ends. At the rear there are three long bristles splayed out like a fork. At the front there are two long antennae. They are wingless, and they move in a fast wriggling side to side motion that genuinely looks like a fish swimming across the tiles.

They are nocturnal and they flee from light, so the usual first sighting is when a bathroom light goes on at 2am and something silver darts under the skirting. If you are finding them dead in a bath or basin, that is typical too: they climb in following moisture and cannot get back up the smooth sides.

One more clue. Silverfish are unusually long lived for an insect, several years in good conditions, and they carry on moulting throughout adult life. Shed skins collecting in a cupboard corner or behind stored boxes are a sign of an established population rather than a stray wanderer.

What they eat and what they ruin

Silverfish feed on starches and polysaccharides. In practice that means:

  • Paper, book bindings and the glue in spines
  • Wallpaper and wallpaper paste
  • Cardboard boxes and packaging
  • Photographs and documents, including certificates and old files
  • Natural fabrics such as cotton and linen, particularly if starched or soiled
  • Dried food such as flour, cereal, oats and pet food left unsealed

The damage pattern is distinctive. Rather than the clean round holes left by some fabric pests, silverfish graze the surface irregularly, leaving thinned patches, small ragged holes and yellow staining on paper and cloth. On a book you often see the printed surface scraped away in patches; on stored linen you see yellowing plus surface fraying.

Because they work slowly and in the dark, damage is usually discovered long after it starts. Boxed documents, framed photographs stored flat, and out of season clothes in a store room are the items most often written off.

Why they live in Dubai bathrooms and kitchens

Silverfish need high humidity, roughly 75% relative humidity or above, and they do best between 21 and 30C. Outdoor Dubai air is often far too hot and dry for them at ground level for much of the year. The conditions they need are created inside our buildings, and always in the same handful of places:

  • Around AC units and chilled pipework. Warm humid air meeting cold surfaces produces persistent condensation, and the void around the fan coil unit or a sweating pipe run stays damp indefinitely.
  • Bathrooms with poor extraction. A fan that is never switched on, or one that is undersized for the room, leaves shower moisture sitting for hours after every use.
  • Under-sink cabinets. Slow trap leaks and condensation on the cold supply, in a dark enclosed box, usually stacked with cardboard and paper products.
  • Behind wardrobes on an external wall. This is the classic Dubai spot. The wall is cooled from inside by AC while carrying heat from outside, the wardrobe kills all airflow, and condensation forms on the back panel where nobody looks for months.

The same logic explains kitchens: under the sink, behind the fridge, and inside the lowest cupboards where pipework runs. If you want a wider view of what else builds up in those areas, see our kitchen pest control guide.

Are they dangerous?

No. Silverfish do not bite, they carry no disease of consequence, and they cause no structural damage. There is no health reason to panic if you find one in the bathroom.

What they do is destroy paper and fabric, and they tell you something about the building. A silverfish population is a moisture reading. Where they are established, there is damp that will eventually cause other problems: mould on the back of a wardrobe, swollen MDF cabinet bases, and conditions that also suit other humidity-loving pests and mould-feeding insects.

The real fix is moisture, not spray

A spray-only approach fails on silverfish more predictably than on almost any other pest, because the insecticide clears the insects while leaving the humidity that supports them completely untouched. Within a few months a new population moves back into the same voids. The moisture work is the treatment; the chemical is the clean-up.

  • Run the bathroom extraction. During the shower and for twenty minutes afterwards, with the door closed. If the fan cannot hold a sheet of tissue against the grille, it needs servicing or replacing.
  • Fix leaks under sinks. Check the trap, the flexible hoses and the isolation valves. A slow drip you cannot hear keeps a cabinet at 90% humidity permanently.
  • Check the AC condensate line. A partially blocked drain line leaves standing water and dampens the surrounding void. Have it flushed at the regular AC service.
  • Dehumidify a badly affected store room. A small dehumidifier run for a few hours a day will pull a closed store room out of silverfish range faster than anything else.
  • Improve airflow behind wardrobes. Pull furniture 5 to 10cm off external walls so air can move behind it, and check the back panel for condensation and mould.
  • Change how you store things. Move documents, photographs and out of season clothing out of cardboard and into sealed plastic boxes. Cardboard is both food and shelter.

Professional treatment

Once the moisture work is under way, treatment clears the existing population and the eggs already laid in the voids. A proper silverfish job has three components:

  • Residual insecticide applied into cracks, crevices, skirting junctions, under-sink voids and around pipe penetrations, rather than sprayed broadly over open floors where silverfish do not travel.
  • Desiccant dust such as diatomaceous earth or a silica-based dust placed into dry voids, wall cavities and the gaps behind cabinets. Dusts last far longer than liquids in a void and work mechanically by damaging the insect's waxy outer layer, so there is no resistance issue.
  • An insect growth regulator where the infestation is established, to stop juveniles reaching breeding age.

Set your expectations for weeks, not days. Silverfish are slow breeders compared with cockroaches, which is good news for the size of the problem and bad news for the speed of the result: it takes time for the existing population to die off and no dramatic overnight drop happens. Most properties are clear inside four to eight weeks when the damp work is done alongside. Our silverfish control service page covers what a visit includes, and the aftercare guide explains why you should not wash treated skirting straight after.

FAQ

What causes silverfish in my home?
Humidity, almost always. Silverfish need relative humidity of roughly 75% or above to survive and they thrive between 21 and 30C. In Dubai those conditions are created indoors rather than outdoors: condensation around AC units and chilled pipework, bathrooms with weak or unused extraction, damp under-sink cabinets, and the still air behind a wardrobe pushed against an external wall. Add a food source such as cardboard boxes, stored books or paper, and the population settles in. A home with dry, well-ventilated storage very rarely has a silverfish problem.
Are silverfish harmful?
No. Silverfish do not bite, they do not transmit disease, and they do not damage the structure of a building the way termites do. They are a nuisance pest with one real cost: the damage they do to paper, books, documents, wallpaper and stored natural-fibre clothing. Some people develop an allergic reaction to the shed skins and scales in heavy long-standing infestations, but that is uncommon. The reason most households want them gone is that finding them in a bathroom at night is unpleasant, and that valuable papers and clothes are at risk.
How do I get rid of silverfish permanently?
Fix the moisture, then treat what is left. Permanent control means running bathroom extraction properly, repairing leaks under sinks, keeping the AC condensate line clear, improving airflow behind wardrobes and in store rooms, and moving documents and clothes out of cardboard into sealed plastic boxes. Once the humidity drops below the level silverfish need, the population cannot rebuild. A professional treatment clears the existing insects and buys you time, but if the damp conditions stay, so do the silverfish.
Why are there silverfish in my bathroom?
A Dubai bathroom is close to ideal for them: warm, humid after every shower, with dark voids under the sink and behind the WC cistern, and often with an extraction fan that is either switched off or too weak to clear the moisture. They come up through floor and skirting gaps, shelter in the cabinet voids during the day, and forage at night. They also feed on the starch in wallpaper paste, tissue and cardboard packaging stored under the sink. Running the extraction for twenty minutes after showers, with the door shut, makes an obvious difference within weeks.
Do silverfish damage clothes and books?
Yes, and this is the main reason to act. They feed on starches and polysaccharides, which puts book bindings, paper, photographs, wallpaper paste, cardboard and natural fabrics such as cotton and linen on the menu. Damage shows as irregular surface grazing rather than clean holes, plus small ragged holes and yellow staining on paper and cloth. Stored documents, certificates, framed photographs and boxed seasonal clothing are the items most often ruined, because they sit undisturbed in exactly the humid, dark conditions silverfish prefer.
How much does silverfish treatment cost?
Indicative pricing for an apartment treatment is roughly AED 250 to 450, covering bathrooms, kitchen, under-sink voids, store rooms and skirting throughout. Villas and properties with several affected store rooms cost more. The range depends on the number of bathrooms, how many rooms are involved, and whether dusting of dry voids is required. A firm quote needs the property details: apartment or villa, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, and where you are seeing them.
