Misting pest control - also called ULV fogging - is the most common method used to knock down adult mosquitoes in Dubai villa gardens, hotel grounds, outdoor dining areas, and community parks. If you have seen a technician walking through a garden with a machine producing a fine, barely visible cloud, that is ULV misting. Here is exactly what it does, what is in it, and what you need to know before booking a treatment.

ULV stands for ultra-low volume. The technique uses a motorised blower to push a diluted insecticide solution through a specialised nozzle at high air velocity, breaking the liquid into very fine droplets - typically 5 to 30 microns in diameter. At that size the droplets float in the air rather than falling immediately to the ground, which means they remain suspended long enough to contact adult mosquitoes in flight.
The term "misting" describes the same technique. A misting treatment applied to a villa garden will coat the underside of leaves, garden hedges, and shaded resting surfaces where adult mosquitoes shelter during the day. This contact kill is immediate, and the residual layer left on foliage continues to act for 2-4 weeks depending on weather and rain.
ULV misting targets adult flying insects. It does not destroy breeding sites - standing water, drain trays, and irrigation pooling still need to be removed separately. A complete mosquito management programme combines ULV misting with larviciding (treating standing water with a biological agent to kill larvae) and habitat reduction.
These two methods are often confused because both produce a visible cloud. The differences are significant:
ULV (cold fogging / misting) uses air pressure alone - no heat. The droplets are slightly larger (5-30 microns), which means they deposit onto surfaces rather than staying airborne as long. This makes ULV more effective for treating foliage surfaces with a residual product. ULV machines are quieter, safer for use near structures, and better suited for residential gardens and outdoor seating areas.
Thermal fogging heats the insecticide solution to create very fine particles (as small as 0.5 microns) in a dense, highly visible smoke. The smaller particle size penetrates deep foliage and open spaces more effectively, making thermal fogging the preferred method for large-scale outdoor operations - community parks, construction sites, and municipal mosquito control programmes. However, the visible smoke causes concern in residential neighbourhoods and the heat can affect sensitive plants.
For Dubai villa gardens, outdoor majlis areas, hotel pool decks, and restaurant terraces, ULV misting is the standard approach. Thermal fogging is more commonly seen in community-wide treatments carried out by Dubai Municipality or large facility management contractors.
Send us a photo of your garden or terrace and we will recommend the right approach - no obligation.
The insecticides used for ULV misting in the UAE are regulated by Dubai Municipality's Public Health Pest Control Section, which publishes an approved chemical list. All legitimate pest control companies operating in Dubai are required to use only products from this approved list.
Cypermethrin is the most widely used active ingredient for outdoor mosquito misting in the UAE. It is a synthetic pyrethroid - a man-made version of the natural insecticide pyrethrin found in chrysanthemum flowers. Cypermethrin at 25% EC (emulsifiable concentrate) is diluted significantly before application and provides rapid knockdown of mosquitoes, flies, and other flying insects on contact. It also leaves a residual layer on treated surfaces.
Deltamethrin is another synthetic pyrethroid used for ULV applications, particularly where slightly longer residual action is needed. It is effective at very low concentrations, which reduces the total volume of chemical applied per treatment.
Both compounds work by disrupting the nervous system of insects on contact and ingestion. At the dilutions used in a professional ULV misting treatment, they pose low acute risk to humans and mammals. However, both are highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates, which is why covering ponds and water features before treatment is non-negotiable.
Dubai has no true winter when it comes to mosquitoes. Temperatures rarely drop below 18-20 degrees Celsius, and irrigation systems, construction site water pooling, and ornamental water features provide year-round breeding conditions. That said, mosquito pressure follows a clear seasonal pattern linked to humidity.
The peak season runs from April through October. As temperatures climb above 30 degrees and humidity rises - often exceeding 70% on coastal properties in Jumeirah, JBR, and Palm Jumeirah - mosquito populations increase rapidly. Even a bottle cap of standing water can produce hundreds of larvae within a week in these conditions. During peak season, villa gardens with outdoor entertaining areas typically need misting every 3-4 weeks to maintain effective control.
There is a secondary surge in September and October as the intense summer heat eases slightly but humidity remains high - this period often produces the worst biting mosquito conditions of the year for outdoor seating.
From November through March (the cooler season), mosquito pressure drops considerably. A treatment every 6-8 weeks is generally sufficient for most villa gardens during this period, or a treatment before major outdoor events such as garden gatherings or outdoor iftar setups.
Outdoor misting is by far the most common use case in Dubai. Villa gardens, pool decks, outdoor majlis areas, commercial terraces, hotel grounds, and community green spaces are the primary applications. The treatment is applied to the perimeter vegetation, ground cover, garden hedges, and any shaded resting areas - this is where adult mosquitoes shelter between feeding.
Indoor ULV misting is rarely necessary in a residential context and should not be the first choice. In an enclosed indoor space, droplets concentrate rapidly and ventilation is poor. Standard indoor pest control for flying insects (flies, mosquitoes entering through windows) is better handled with residual surface sprays to entry points and targeted treatment of any indoor breeding sources.
Indoor misting does have legitimate uses in large commercial spaces - warehouses, food processing facilities, and indoor agricultural spaces - but these require specialist products approved for indoor use and strict adherence to re-entry protocols.
A properly applied ULV misting treatment by a licensed technician carries low risk to residents when standard precautions are followed.
Before treatment:
Re-entry times: For outdoor garden misting, 30-60 minutes is the standard re-entry interval after the visible mist has settled. For any enclosed or semi-enclosed outdoor space (covered terrace, pergola with walls), allow at least 2 hours and ventilate the area before re-use. If there are infants or pregnant women in the household, treat this time the same as an indoor application and allow 6-7 hours.
Plants: Ornamental garden plants are generally unharmed by pyrethroid misting at the concentrations used for mosquito control. Edible plants and herb gardens should be covered during treatment and washed before consumption after the re-entry period.
We cover villa gardens, hotel grounds, outdoor dining areas, and community spaces across Dubai and the UAE. WhatsApp for a same-day quote.
All professional pest control applications in Dubai - including outdoor ULV misting - must be carried out by companies licensed by Dubai Municipality's Public Health Pest Control Section. This licensing ensures that technicians are trained, that only approved chemicals are used, and that treatments are applied at safe concentrations.
Using an unlicensed pest control operator in Dubai carries fines of up to AED 50,000. If you are booking a misting treatment for a villa, hotel, or commercial outdoor space, ask the company for their Dubai Municipality licence number before confirming. Legitimate operators will provide this without hesitation.
For community-level treatments - such as shared garden areas in gated communities or common areas in residential developments - the community management company is typically responsible for arranging licensed pest control. Landlords are also required to report major pest infestations to 800 900 (Dubai Municipality's environment line) within 24 hours if they pose a public health risk.
PestsGone is a Dubai Municipality-approved pest control company. Our misting treatments use only chemicals from the approved list, applied by trained technicians at the correct concentrations. We provide treatment records and chemical data sheets on request.
